  • Meditation/mindfulness
  • Deep breathing
  • Sleep
  • Eating healthy foods

Incorporating activities that help you relax and be more mindful each day will significantly reduce your overall stress level. Even just a few minutes of deep breathing or meditation can help.

Building your resilience through self-care is also important. This means making sure you take care of your physical and mental health even when you’re feeling busy. After all, you can’t give from an empty cup.

Developing Emotional Intelligence for Better Self Management

Decision making is perhaps the most important self management skill. I’ve seen throughout my career how good decision making can result in success and, alternatively, how bad decisions can significantly stunt progress.

  • Weigh options.
  • Select the best choice.
  • Take action.
  • Evaluate the decision and its results.

Decision fatigue is a real thing. Save major decisions for when you are fresh and alert. Then, create systems or habits for minor decisions.

Use a combination of logic and intuition when making decisions. Data and logic are critical, but your intuition is often correct too. Even if you can’t logically justify it, your intuition might be drawing on past subconscious experience and data.

Use previous decisions to see patterns. Reflect both on your successful decisions and also the decisions you regret. What should you have done differently? What worked well? Use these insights to make better decisions in the future.

Enhancing Focus and Concentration

Studies even show that mindfulness can change the brain and its various mental networks, which in turn changes how we process information and our ability to regulate emotions and behavior. Regular mindfulness practice is another way to improve your focus and concentration.

Self-motivation is the ultimate self management skill. It’s the drive to keep working even when external motivators are not present.

You can increase motivation by establishing personal rewards and incentives. Even setting personal incentives to be more self-motivated can be effective. Give yourself credit for small wins on the way to achieving larger goals. These rewards don’t have to be extravagant. Sometimes simply recognizing your progress is reward enough.

Adopting a growth mindset is essential to self-motivation. You must believe that you can learn and get better at anything. Rather than feeling like a particular task is impossible, view it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Connecting the dots and finding purpose and meaning in your work is key to increasing motivation. Relate your daily tasks to higher level goals and values. With this perspective, you can turn simple daily tasks into work that has real meaning in your journey toward high level goals.

You must consciously overcome procrastination and self doubt. One way to increase motivation is to break tasks into bite sized pieces. Then, start with the easiest piece to do to build momentum.
