Critical thinking creativity: How to improve it?

Individual deep in thought at rustic table, sketchbook and notes spread around.

As a former industrial engineer who later became a lean management consultant, I’ve experienced the value of critical thinking and creativity in driving innovation. Critical thinking and creativity are both critical to solving complex problems and optimizing processes.

In this post, I’ll discuss the specific tactics you can use to improve your critical thinking and creativity based on my experience in both manufacturing and consulting. You’ll learn how to analyze information, develop ideas, and solve common challenges.

Understanding Critical Thinking and Creativity

Critical thinking is the ability to objectively analyze and evaluate information to form a rational judgement. In other words, it’s a skill that enables you to assess various data points and come to a logical conclusion. The components of critical thinking include:

  • Objectivity
  • Analysis
  • Evaluation
  • Inference
  • Explanation
  • Self-regulation

Creativity, meanwhile, is the capacity to produce original ideas, solutions, or insights. It’s about thinking differently and connecting dots that others don’t connect. The components of creativity include:

  • Originality
  • Flexibility
  • Fluency
  • Elaboration
  • Imagination

These two skills are highly interdependent. The role of critical thinking is to evaluate and improve creative ideas. Meanwhile, creativity fuels critical thinking by enabling you to think of new insights and solutions to problems. Together, they’re a powerhouse skillset for problem solving and innovation.

During my time as a consultant, I witnessed the impact of this combination on businesses countless times. For example, a line worker might creatively think of a new process and then use critical thinking to evaluate the feasibility and potential impact of the idea. The combination of these two skills often leads to breakthrough business improvements.

The Importance of Critical Thinking Creativity in Today’s World

Our world is evolving at a rapid pace, and the landscape of the workplace is becoming more flexible and dynamic. In fact, a 2020 study found that flexible work requires:

  • self-direction
  • adaptability
  • comfort in ambiguous situations

This is where critical thinking creativity comes into play.

You likely find yourself in various complex problem-solving situations each day. Whether you’re a manager solving supply chain problems or an entrepreneur trying to figure out how to navigate market changes, having the ability to think through a problem critically and creatively is invaluable.

These skills also help you make better decisions. You’ll be able to look at a problem from multiple perspectives and come up with creative solutions. This is especially important as businesses move faster than ever before, and the ability to make quick, yet still smart, decisions can set a company apart.

Additionally, critical thinking creativity leads to innovation and adaptability. In my consulting business, I’ve seen companies succeed or fail based on their ability to innovate and adapt. And those who build these skills in their teams are often the ones who stay ahead.

Developing Critical Thinking Skills

Being able to analyze information in an unbiased manner is at the core of critical thinking. In other words, you can’t let your own biases affect how you interpret data. This is something I’ve become good at after years of analyzing production processes.

You must be unwilling to accept arguments or evidence at face value. Always question the source, reliability, and relevance of any information you come across.

All of us have biases and make assumptions whether we realize it or not. The key is to understand your own biases and how they might be impacting your thinking.

Asking the right questions allows you to extract valuable insights from the data. And don’t be afraid to ask deeper questions. Often, the most valuable data isn’t on the surface level.

You need to be good at basic logical reasoning. This includes:

  1. Identifying patterns
  2. Making connections
  3. Drawing valid conclusions
  4. Avoiding logical fallacies
  5. Constructing sound arguments

These skills will help you solve complex problems and make good decisions.

Additionally, using methods like FMEA can be beneficial in enhancing reliability and safety in decision-making processes.

Cultivating Creativity

Open book on table with diagrams, colorful art supplies, and notebook on reasoning. The best way to develop creative thinking is to let go of your curiosity and willingness to learn. I’ve found some of my most creative solutions to lean management by simply being open to new ideas.

A key aspect of creative thinking is encouraging divergent thinking. This is the practice of generating multiple ideas or solutions to a problem. Don’t worry about quality; just focus on quantity.

Using specific brainstorming techniques can amplify your creative thinking. If you allocate time to thinking creatively, you might be surprised at how many ideas you can generate. Create an environment where people feel safe sharing any idea, no matter how crazy it might be.

Another way to inspire creative thinking is to discuss different perspectives. What would a customer think about this problem? What about a competitor? Or someone unrelated to the industry in any capacity?

You’ll inevitably face creative thinking blocks. It happens to everyone. Here’s how to push through it:

  1. Change your environment.
  2. Step away and come back to the project later.
  3. Collaborate with someone else on the problem.
  4. Find inspiration from random stimuli.
  5. Question your assumptions.

Remember, creative thinking is a skill you can improve with practice.

Integrating Critical Thinking and Creativity

Critical thinking and creativity are a match made in heaven. They’re really two of the same coin when it comes to problem solving and innovation.

You really do need both an analytical and creative approach.

  1. First, take a creative approach to ideation
  2. then apply critical thinking to analyze and improve those ideas. This strategy has helped me through countless lean transformation projects.

By applying critical thinking to analyze and improve creative ideas, you ensure that your creative solutions are grounded and effective. In other words, it’s about turning raw creativity into a set of actionable plans.

Using creativity to improve problem solving often results in breakthrough solutions. When logical analysis fails, creativity can often uncover a new way forward.

The compound benefits on innovation are tremendous. Businesses that encourage both critical thinking and creativity typically dominate their industry in terms of innovation and agility.

Practical Exercises for Enhancing Critical Thinking Creativity

Mind mapping is a critical thinking exercise to help you see the bigger picture and generate new ideas. Simply start with a main idea and then branch off to other related ideas.

Socratic questioning is a critical thinking exercise where you ask a series of questions to delve deeper into a topic and challenge assumptions. It’s one of the best critical thinking exercises.

The SCAMPER method is a critical thinking exercise to help you generate new ideas by:

  • Substitute
  • Combine
  • Adapt
  • Modify
  • Put to another use
  • Eliminate
  • Reverse

It allows you to approach problems from a different angle to generate new ideas.

The Six Thinking Hats, a critical thinking exercise developed by Edward de Bono, is the idea of looking at a problem from various perspectives. Each “hat” is a different perspective.

Group problem solving activities are a critical thinking exercise as it:

  • Exposes you to other people’s perspectives
  • Encourages healthy debate
  • Combines multiple people’s expertise
  • Generates innovation through synergy
  • Improves your communication skills

These exercises will make a significant impact on your critical thinking and creativity.

Another effective method for problem-solving is utilizing 8D Problem Solving, which provides comprehensive steps to resolve issues.

Overcoming Obstacles to Critical Thinking Creativity

Thoughtful person at desk with scattered papers, artistic tools, and vision board inspiring creativity. The first step to overcoming mental blocks is identifying them. Common mental blocks include fear of failure, perfectionism, and fixed thinking patterns.

Use strategies to overcome cognitive biases. If you avoid cognitive biases like confirmation bias or anchoring, you’ll set yourself up for success. Seek out information that challenges your existing knowledge.

Overcoming the fear of failure and the fear of criticism is the solution to solving both. Both are inevitable parts of the process of learning. In my own career, some of my most significant breakthroughs came immediately following my most embarrassing failures.

Adopting a growth mindset is key. If you believe you can learn and get better, that’s what you’ll do. If you view challenges as an opportunity to grow, you’re likely open to allowing your brain to figure it out.

Creating an environment that values critical thinking and creativity is important. This can be achieved by:

  • promoting open dialogue
  • making sure everyone feels heard
  • valuing people that think differently
  • rewarding people that think creatively

I’ve used this in a variety of organizations, and it’s stunning to see the transformation. All of a sudden, everyone just wants to get better and innovate.

Additionally, embracing techniques such as Lean Innovation can help foster a creative and critical approach to problem-solving within your organization.
